Tranampelo is the biggest undivided vineyard in the island and is located in Glinado, an area formerly known as Trana Ampelia (Mighty Vines). Aged more than 200 years old, the vineyard was revived by Makridimitris family after a long period of fallow, in 2005.
In this organically cultivated vineyard, many varieties are planted together, representative of Naxos and Cyclades in general: the white varieties of Potamisi, Monemvasia, Aidani, Assyrtiko, Koundoura (Savatiano), Haraibraim and the red varieties of Fokiano, Mandilaria, Mavro Aidani, Mavro Potamisi, Mavrotragano.
Tranampelo produces two labels of white dry white wines, the monovarietal Potamisi and the Odd blend which follows the traditional paradox of vinifying multiple white and red varieties together.
Tranampelo promotes a culture of sustainability. Aiming to zero waste, they produce as many by-products of the vine as possible, focusing mainly on grape molasses (“petimezi”), grape marc spirit (“strofilia”) and vinegar (“glykadi”). At the same time, a vegetable garden planted in the surroundings enhances biodiversity in the area and provides Tranampelo with fresh produce, also used for a “farm to table” experience during the various gastronomic events and wine tasting sessions hosted. Last but not least, cultural events with wine and music are organised in the vineyards for locals and visitors of the island.
You can taste Tranampelo’s products by visiting the vineyard and joining a guided tour but also to Oinochoros, the wine bar owned by the vine-grower Constantinos Makridimitris.
