YPSELIA

“Ypselia” is a small family business based in Mylos, Naxos. Mylos, as a small and semi-mountainous village, is located in the heart of the Melani valley. A place where the wild vegetation, the rivers, the relief and the texture of the soil are reminiscent of a small paradise. This paradise provides the ideal conditions for the well-being of our beloved bees and the production of excellent beekeeping products, away from cars and large crops, which could toxically harm the bees.

“Ypselia” started the activity as an alternative way of living for a modern citizen who was looking for quietness in his homeland of Naxos. The interest in beekeeping came unexpectedly through friends influence, however, in the course of their journey, the beekeepers were enlightened that his great-grandfather was equally involved with the most hardworking creatures in the world, the bees, even in the same village.

The company’s production covers a wide range of beekeeping products, equipment for beekeepers, local products of Naxos from cooperating producers, but also t-shirts, with the aim of raising awareness about the serious issue of bee extinction due to climate change.

Worth mentioning is the possibility of “bee-visits”. Starting from the bus stop and until you reach the village square and the cafe, you will walk along a fairy-tale path full of plane trees, colorful houses, next to the running water to the apiary. There you will have the opportunity to see the bees up close, learn how honey and related products are produced, how the bees work and if you are lucky you will also meet the queen bee. It is a different and unique experience, which is linked to sustainability, but also the culinary and cultural culture of Naxos.
